Sourwood saved the 2007 honey season here in the mountains of Western North Carolina
The 2007 honey season started off slow here in the mountains, but finished strong with a Sourwood season that is one for the history books.

Carl could not figure what killed this bumble bee. He started poking around and a well hidden spider fell out.

Bee Removal at The Biltmore Estate
Edd Buchanan, Chris Mathis, Calvin Robinson and Larry Sebren recently took a colony of bees from an old dairy barn on the Biltmore Estate.   A video was made, as well as lots of photos.   Here are a few photos showing the comb being banded into frames and Larry Sebren's famous bee vac being used to capture some of the massive colony of bees.

Wait Chris, I really don't think you should try to tickle the bees
Chris has that look that says, "I am taking this colony home with me today".
Chris just THINKS he is taking MY bees home.
Come on guys, you look like you are handling toxic waste or something

The brood nest was carefully cut out with a large serated knife.
A sledge hammer and a wedge were used to split a section out of the hollow tree so access could be gained to the brood nest.
The brood comb was secured into frames with rubber bands
Bee chapter members came together to remove a colony from old cabin in Edneyville.

Calvin Robinson, Carl Chesick, Diotima Booraem, Hannah Thornburg, Lee   Banks,   Rick Messer, and Shannon Thornburg made quick work of this removal. Rick made video which will be edited and copied to DVD
Carl has quite a following in beekeeping
Shannon and Hannah Thornburgs photos from the same cabin colony removal
The ever innovative Carl Chesick brought some frames with him that were prepared with a nylon mesh to hold the comb in the frames until the bees attach it.   Notice the queen excluder below the brood nest.   This is being used as a queen INCLUDER to keep her from leaving.
Darrell may be a first year beekeeper, but he successfully removed this nice colony from a house in Haywood County.   He asked some advice, but pretty much went out there and did it on his own.   Nice work Darrell!
preloading the rubberbands is helpful
Darrell was ready with an inventory of things he might need
The fact the house was being torn down was a huge plus as no worry about fixing things
